Eberle gets WSU degree
Derrick Jerome Eberle, a 2005 graduate of Sequim High School, received a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from Washington State University.
Eberle graduated summa cum laude from WSU by maintaining a grade-point average of 3.90 or better.
Eberle said he plans on pursuing a career in landscape architecture, either with a firm in Tacoma or in Spokane. He also was a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician in Spokane and hopes to continue that service in the future.
Eberle was one of five valedictorians in Sequim’s 2005 graduating class, along with Jon Eaton, Holly Faulstich, Tory Olsen and Hannah Yamamoto.
Middle school hosts Internet safety night
Sequim Middle School, 301 W. Hendrickson Road, is the site of "Internet Safety Night," a computer safety night open to the public, starting at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19.
Among items discussed at the event:
• The importance of learning about the sites and applications youths use
• Social networking sites and how to help children use them wisely
• What to do if your child is the victim of "cyber bullying"
• Protecting children against online
predators
• Online gaming
• Objectionable content, how to block it and what to do if your child views it

Sequim Lady Elks awards scholarships
Sequim Ladies of Elks No. 2642 awarded five $1,000 scholarships to soon-to-be Sequim High School graduates.
They are:
_ Nicholas Bowden, who plans to attend Eastern Washington University and major in forensic science
_ Lindsey Hintz, who plans to attend Washington State University or the
University of Portland to major in
veterinary medicine
_ David N. Lopes, who plans to attend Lewis & Clark College or Western Washington University to major in pediatric physical therapy
_ Kayla E. Santjer, who is considering The Evergreen College or Peninsula College to pursue a degree in floral design or massage therapy
_ John Textor, who plans to attend Bellevue College or Olympic Community College to pursue a firefighting degree
Sequim students earn spots on WWU list
Six students from the Sequim area were named to the Western Washington University honor roll.
They include Jenny Blenk, Isaac Boekelheide, Daniel Brooks and Rebecca Horst; students Nicholas Grinnell and Jaymes McClain were mentioned in the last week’s edition of the Sequim Gazette.
Students qualify for Western’s honor roll by achieving a grade-point average in the top 10 percent of their class.
Clark receives national honor
Ashleigh Clark of Sequim was awarded membership in the National Society of High School Scholars.
The society recognizes top scholars and invites students with academic excellence to become members.
Society members are allowed scholarship opportunities, academic competitions, free events, publications, programs through society partners, online forums and more.

Youth fishing day set
Kids Fishing Day is set for 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, at the Sequim Water Reclamation site pond north of Carrie Blake Park.
The event is for youths 14 years and younger; fishing is free and licenses are not required. Rods, reels, bait, fish cleaning and ice will be provided.
The day is sponsored by Puget Sound Anglers, North Olympic Peninsula Chapter, in conjunction with the city of Sequim.
