Reed earns U.S. Bank scholarship from WWU, Balkan gets scholarship and students excel at WSU

Reed earns U.S. Bank scholarship from WWU

Western Washington University student Austin Reed, son of Nicole Reed of Sequim, and Brian Reed of Whispering Pines, N.C., received a $2,300 U.S. Bank Minority Scholarship for the 2016-2017 academic year. The U.S. Bank Minority Scholarship is awarded to minority students in Western’s College of Business and Economics.

Reed graduated from Sequim High School in 2011 and is a junior at Western. He is studying manufacturing and supply chain management with a minor in business analytics. He plans to graduate in 2017.

Balkan gets scholarship

Valley City State University in Valley City, N.D., announced that 2013 Sequim High graduate Taylor Balkan has been awarded the Jim and Meryl O’Connell Scholarship for the 2016-2017 academic year. Balkan is a junior at Valley City State and is pursuing a major in math education. She is the daughter of Becky Stanton and Scott Balkan of Sequim.

Students excel at WSU

Eleven Sequim-area students recently were named to Washington State University’s President’s Honor Roll for the 2016 spring semester.

They are Aldo Garcia, Stacey Gary, Katherine Harker, Kaitlin Heike, Evan Hill, Brianna Kettel, Deborah Lyles, Miguel Moroles, Matthew O’Brien, Casey Torres and Abraham Weiss.

To be eligible for the honor roll, undergraduate students must be enrolled in a minimum of nine graded hours in a single term at WSU and earn a grade-point average of 3.75 or earn a 3.50 cumulative GPA based on 15 cumulative hours of graded work.
