Science Cafe hosts PNNL scientist on Jan. 10

George Bonheyo, Ph.D., will give a definition of synthetic biology and gene/genome editing, describe how these differ from classic genetic engineering, and then discuss ramifications for the natural environment, biotech industries and society (health, environment, security and economics) at the next Science Café, sponsored by the Sequim Education Foundation.

The event is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Paradise Restaurant, 703 N. Sequim Ave., and is free and open to the public.

Bonheyo’s presentation is entitled “The End of Evolution: How Synthetic Biology is Changing the Rules of Life, Biotechnology, and Biosecurity.”

Bonheyo, is a senior research scientist and the Biotechnology Team lead in the Energy and Environment Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Marine Sciences Laboratory in Sequim.

He has more than 25 years of experience applying genetic engineering and molecular microbiology to address challenges in national security, environment, human health and biotechnology.
