Sequim Education Foundation’s Fall 2013 “Grants for Teachers Program” announced its winners Oct. 28. Fifteen grant applications totaling over $10,000 were received.

Eleven grants were fully funded and two were partially funded.

SEF has been awarding teacher grants for the past 11 years, ranging from field trips to art supplies, books, educational games, science materials, technological aids and funding after school clubs.

“SEF’s mission is to inspire excellence and we commend the teachers who go above and beyond to find ways to enhance their classrooms and encourage learning,” said SEF grants chairman Kathy Schock.

“We owe thanks to the amazing support from the community as well as organizations like the Sequim Alumni Association and the Haller Foundation with their generous contributions. Thanks also goes to the committee members who take the time to make the hard decisions as to who receives the grants with the funds we have available.”

The 2013 Grant Committee members were Jason Wilwert, Mary Budke, Stephen Rosales, SEF’s Elna Kawal, SEF’s Jodi Olsen, and SEF student representative Kelly Anders, with Superintendent Kelly Shea present for the presentations.

The 2013 grant winners and their projects are listed below.

• Mitzi Sanders, college tour, $600, SHS, 10th and 11th grade college dual campus field trip;

• Caleb Gentry, field trip to Microsoft & Valve, $566, SMS, field trip for eighth-grade game design class;

• Steve Mahitka, plant and nutrient testing kits, $522.45, SHS, testing kit for ag classes;

• Marcy, Benitez, Miller, video cameras, $500, SHS, video cameras for Spanish and sign language skit recording;

• Sharle Osborne, Let’s Do Lunch fourth-grade field trip, $500; Haller, Feiro field trip for fourth-graders;

• Jaye Hall, glass fusing supplies, $500, SHS, material for glass fusing class;

• Elizabeth Lawson, Family Reading Night, $500, SMS, books for family reading night for elementary schools;

• William Seabolt, JS-100 Jet spray torch for welding, $478.71, SHS, auto/welding cast iron welder.

The total granted was $8,561.87.
