Sequim Avenue’s face changing

While the new façade under construction at Town Square on the northwest corner of Sequim Avenue and Washington Street may be the most visible change, it's just one of several new or expanding businesses along Sequim's major access from U.S. Highway 101.

Salon 13

Nearest the Sequim Avenue and Highway 101 interchange, Salon 13 opened Sept. 1 at 521 S. Sequim Ave. next to Red Dog Coffee.

"We do take walk-ins," owner Peggy Sill said. She and Stephanie Barth, both licensed cosmetologists, offer cuts, hairstyling, color and perms.

Sill hopes to add nail services soon, for natural nails.

"We have the potential for having four stylists going at once," Sill said. "I don’t like anybody waiting."

Within a month or two she wants to have a third stylist.

She and Barth also are finishing a photo studio in the shop.

"We’re shooting for October," Sill said, to open it and offer a hairstyling and photo package at that time.

Sill graduated from

Sequim High School in 1998 and Barth attended Port Angeles High before the two met while attending The Hair School in Port Angeles.

Sill worked as a stylist in Port Angeles before opening Salon 13 and said what she has learned on the job is more important than her initial training. That’s why she and Barth take continuing education in color techniques every month through Schwarzkopf Professional.

"If you don’t keep up with new things, you’ll flop."

A Catered Affair

A couple of blocks away, at 229 S. Sequim Ave., A Catered Affair began serving lunch in late July.

Owner Sherry Schubert has operated her catering business at that location and she makes the building available for private parties and business meetings with on-site catering.

A dine-in lunch is served from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

"We play with our food," Schubert said. "We do very interesting things."

For example, every day they offer an ice-cold soup shooter, an intense burst of flavor in a small glass.

Schubert has considered opening for dinner.

"We want to be open at least the first Friday each month to be part of that arts scene," she said, referring to the First Friday Art Walk.

As for regular dinner hours, she said, "When we’re ready, we’ll do it."

Schubert is especially proud of her two chefs, Marc Gregson and Kevin Parker.

"Both worked at top restaurants in Seattle for many years."

Sequim Farms

International

If you can’t get away from the desk for lunch,

Sequim Farms International will deliver sandwiches to you by bicycle courier from its new location on Sequim Avenue.

Formerly a taxi stand and gas station, the tiny building at the northeast corner of

Sequim Avenue and Washington Street has a new coat of paint and tile flooring.

Ryan Elmer, company vice president, said, "Most of our customers are stoked that there is a third option for deliveries besides subs and pizza."

The company now makes sandwich lunches at its Carlsborg location and uses bicycles outfitted with coolers to deliver food to Sequim businesses.

With the sandwich-making operation soon in central Sequim, Elmer said, they will add home delivery and an expanded menu.

While it currently offers a rotating variety of sandwiches each day, one of its

first goals, according to Elmer, is to make all sandwiches available every day.

Then, he said, "We’ll start adding a few things at a time."

The new location at 104 E. Washington St. will have outdoor tables with umbrellas for a sidewalk café ambiance, but no indoor seating.

Orders are taken online at www.sequimfamilyfarms.net, by phone at 681-0635 or by fax at 681-0442.
