County-wide local law enforcement agencies, including the Sequim Police Department, are participating in the Nationwide Prescription Take-Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 24.
Individuals can drop off expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Sequim Police Department within the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St.
Individuals may also drop off vaping pens without the internal batteries for destruction.
The collection service will include both controlled and non-controlled prescription drugs as well as over-the-counter medications. The police department will also accept illegal drugs for destruction; however, syringes and medical waste will not be accepted.
The service is free and anonymous with no questions asked.
Staff and volunteers will be on location to accept the items.
Once the Sequim Civic Center re-opens in accordance with COVID-19 guidelines, drugs may also be dropped off anytime during regular office hours Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office will also be accepting prescription drugs for destruction from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Oct. 24 at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. To accommodate social distancing and COVID-19 safety protocols, citizens can simply drive through in front of the incident command motorhome in the northwest corner of the parking lot.
National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is sponsored by the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration. Last fall, Americans reportedly turned in about 883,000 pounds of prescription drugs at nearly 6,300 sites operated by the DEA and almost 5,000 of its state and local law enforcement partners.
