The evening of April 24, the Sequim Education Foundation hosted its fourth annual Student Film Festival at the Sequim High School auditorium.

The audience viewed eight short films created by students of the Sequim School District, and nine winning students left with $6,750

in scholarship money along with other prizes for their work.

There were three top scholarship prizes, with the film "Recycling is Murder" winning the top prize. Each of the three creators – Michael Cullinan, Ravi Carlson and Michael Lee – received $1,000.

Their movie was a humorous play on recycling that emphasized all of the "bad" effects of recycling – but viewers saw its positive logic.

The second-place scholarship was awarded to "The Ripple Effect" that demonstrated the positive effect of good deeds. It had a local component showing people around Sequim helping each other, and how that effect multiplies from one person to another. It then featured an international segment about a similar effect of a mission effort in Mexico by local

Sequim people.

The final scholarship prize went to a movie about a pizza delivery competition where two delivery guys competed to see who could deliver a pizza faster.

One braved a crossing of the Dungeness River that commanded the attention of everyone in the auditorium. The humorous race was complemented by a unique sound track as each man raced to deliver his pizza.

"Believe and Achieve" won the "Peoples Choice Award" – otherwise known as the Elkie – that is given to the film the audience cheers the loudest. The trophy is kept in the cabinet at the front of the high school.

This year’s winner featured the Sequim High School football team and the efforts of one second-string player to play the game and win the interest of a particular cheerleader. The Sequim High School band provided the sound track.

Other awards were presented for best actress, best actor and best sound track. This year’s festival represented a substantial improvement over the three previous film festivals and leaves Sequim anticipating an even more impressive festival next year.
