People walked in droves for the Dungeness Valley Health & Wellness Clinic last Saturday.
Sandy Hutter, volunteer coordinator for the clinic, said 279 people participated in either the 1-mile or 5-mile walk and 76 volunteers helped put on the ninth annual Fun Walk & Wellness Fair on September 14.
Rose Gibbs, clinic director, said it was a full and exciting day.
“In my four years I haven’t seen it this busy and active before,” she said. “The generosity of our community helps us feel like we really are a part of it.”
The clinic set a goal of $47,000 and so far has tallied nearly $36,000 with more donations coming in, Hutter said. Last year, it raised almost $34,000.
“That really is excellent for us,” Gibbs said. “That will support us for the year. We really depend on that.”
Several individuals and agencies formed teams like Amber Freeman with her family and friends.
They joined the walk for the first year as Team Hailey to honor Freeman’s 8-year-old-daughter Hailey who died last April from unknown causes. Supporters wore red and a special name tag in her honor.
Freeman said she appreciated the support with several people donating in advance. She plans to keep the tradition of walking in Hailey’s memory going.
The free clinic, at 777 N. Fifth Ave., Suite 109, celebrates its 12th year in October. Organizers said the walk continues for its 10th year in 2014.
The clinic’s basic urgent care opens at 4:45 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis Mondays and Thursdays.
The chronic health care clinic is by appointment on Tuesdays from 1-6 p.m. and the first and third Thursdays.
