Time to stand up, Wolves.

That’s the message hundreds of graduating seniors from Sequim High School received at their commencement ceremonies Friday night, coming from their principal, Shawn Langston, and a host of their classmates.

A full 100 years since bestowing diplomas on its first graduating class, SHS and school board officials did the same for about 225 grads on June 12, but not before hearing some pearls of wisdom.

Valedictorians Emily Carter, Shannon Gordon and E. Vance Willis each had their say. “We are broken … because this world is a confusing place,” Carter noted. “There is no higher call than empathy.”

Katherine Landoni, a 2015 graduate and staff-elected speaker, addressed her peers, encouraging them to use critical thinking skills and to “think like a scientist” once graduating and moving onto their next phase of life.

Class-selected speaker Danny Willis (pictured, bottom right) drew laughs for his theatrical performance — perhaps his last dressed as a purple pterodactyl, he noted — and took the opportunity to quote martial arts legend Bruce Lee: “You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup … Become like water, my friends.”

Langston presented Sequim graduate Josiah Anastasi with the U-Turn Award at the graduation ceremony for his efforts to change course in achieving academic excellence.

Outgoing Sequim schools superintendent Kelly Shea added his two cents before the awarding of diplomas, telling grads, “I thank you for what you’ve done, who you are and for what you’re going to be.”
