Sequim hires marketing, communications manager

Barbara Hanna, owner of Lost Mountain Lavender for seven years, has been hired as the city of Sequim’s new marketing and communications manager.

 

She has 29 years of experience in public relations including work for Nordstrom, The Art Institute of Seattle and managing creative departments and projects for two computer game companies.

Sequim City Manager Steve Burkett said some of Hanna’s key duties would be bringing in citizens’ and customers’ priorities so that the city can change its operations to better meet needs. Other responsibilities include development and implementation of programs related to marketing, tourism, public communication and community relations.

"I think one of the desires for me and the city is to facilitate better communication all around," Hanna said.

She also understands the city staff and council’s desire to communicate better with tourists and residents.

"I felt we were on the same page with priorities and goals," Hanna said.

Hanna becomes a three-fourths, part-time employee for the position that pays a $40,000 a year salary with pro-rated benefits.

The position is funded partially by lodging tax proceeds, which are restricted to expenditures promoting tourism in Sequim.

"I’m excited to have Barbara join the city team," Burkett said.

"She has diverse experience in private sector communications, marketing and business management."

Hanna put the lavender farm up for sale earlier in the summer saying she was looking for a change.

Her plan was to look for work after the summer, but the city’s communication position caught her eye because it fits her background and love for Sequim.

"Sequim is a very special city with a lot to offer to both visitors and residents," she said.

She begins work for the city on Sept. 13.

Hanna intends to keep Lost Mountain Lavender open weekends in September before closing for the season in October.

The farm is still on the market, but she says there are a number of interested parties.
