Sequim man pleads not guilty to child rape, molestation

A Sequim man has pleaded not guilty in Clallam County Superior Court to four counts of first-degree child rape and one charge of first-degree child molestation.

Anthony Ray Brownfield’s accuser is a 22-year-old woman who said the sexual assaults began when she was 5 and ended when she was 9.

Brownfield, 52, remained on his own recognizance after entering pleas on the charges, all of which included enhancements.

The woman said the assaults occurred between June 1, 2002, and April 21, 2006.

There is no statute of limitations on the charges, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Matthew Roberson said last week.

The woman had reported the assaults in 2016 but was unwilling to proceed with charges, according to the probable cause statement authored by sheriff’s office Detective Brandon Stoppani.

After the woman said she was ready to disclose information about the sexual assaults, Stoppani interviewed her Sept. 19.

She told Stoppani one of the assaults was “a role play based on pictures in a pornographic comic,” according to the statement.

It described four alleged incidents involving Brownfield.

“At age 8, she overheard adults talking about molestation,” Stoppani said.

The woman told Stoppani, “I was like, oh my god. What have I been doing? I was like, um, OK, so this isn’t normal,” according to the statement.

“I was ashamed of myself.”

On Aug. 2, the woman told Stoppani that Brownfield had offered to look after her son and said she could message Brownfield via Facebook messenger.

Superior Court Judge Lauren Erickson granted an order authorizing the interception of messages between the woman and Brownfield from Feb. 6 to Feb. 13.

“Can you take 2 seconds to tell me why you molested me when i was a child. Say something so I can move on with my life,” she messaged Brownfield on Feb. 8, according to the statement.

“I’m sorry i never ment for that to happen because I could never say no to you i was (expletive deleted) an very weak,” Brownfield said in his message back to her.

“I told the devil that i won’t ever do anything to harm or hurt you,” he said.

“I don’t deserve your forgiveness but I hope you will some day I love you more than anything else i will text you very soon as I think about this some more on this ok again please forgive me for the way i had behaved with you back then”

In a Feb. 14 video interview with Stoppani, Brownfield said he “felt disgusted” with himself, Stoppani said.

Brownfield said he had sexual contact with the girl “maybe 30, 40, 50, I don’t know” times, according to the statement.

“I wanted to show her how she should be treated from a man, when she did find somebody,” he told Stoppani.

“Just shoot me please. Kill me,” Brownfield said. “I’m glad it’s out now. I’m tired of being sick with myself.”
