Sequim police make arrest in hit-and-run case

Sequim police have arrested Cole Douglas, 22, in the hit-and-run incident that seriously injured 13-year-old Colton Dufour while the boy was skateboarding with friends on the evening of Monday, March 31, during spring break.

Officers made the arrest in Muskogee, Oklahoma, on Wednesday, May 21. The department issued a press release about Douglas’ capture at around 4 p.m. Thursday, May 22.

According to the press release, Sequim police collaborated with the Muskogee Police Department and the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office to make the arrest. They took Douglas into custody on a nationwide extraditable warrant for hit and run with injury (a Class C felony).

Douglas was booked into the Muskogee County Jail after his arrest, according to the press release. He was arraigned in Muskogee on Thursday, at which time he waived his extradition back to Washington State where he will be booked into the Clallam County Correctional Facility on the hit and run with injury charge as well as a charge of vehicular assault (a Class B felony).

A timetable for his booking and a court hearing were not available.

The vehicle suspected to have been involved in the incident was also located in Muskogee. It was seized and processed for evidence, police report.

The incident occurred at around 9 p.m. while Colton and several friends were skateboarding in the 600 block of West Spruce Street behind Safeway. The Sequim Middle School seventh grader was struck from behind, according to his mother, Cherie Tachell. He sustained a head injury and a broken pelvis, along with other injuries, and was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Tachell said doctors told her that her son would face months of rehabilitation therapy.

Tachell could not be reached for comment immediately after news of the arrest was announced.
