Sequim Public Works director Garlington to retire

City of Sequim Public Works Director David Garlington is retiring. His last day in the office is Friday, Jan. 29.

Garlington began his service with the city in 2011 as the City Engineer and Assistant Public Works Director. He was promoted to Public Works Director in 2015.

Matt Klontz, city engineer and Assistant Public Works Director, has been appointed interim Public Works Director.

“I had the pleasure of appointing David as Public Works Director; in that role, and in his previous role as City Engineer, David excelled,” Sequim city manager Charlie Bush said. “His leadership and management led to a significant number of new projects and partnerships, enhanced the culture and services in the Public Works Department, and helped the City become significantly more active in legislative advocacy.

Sequim is a better place due to David’s service. I wish him all the best in his retirement and will miss working with him.”

Highlights of Garlington’s accomplishment during his tenure, city officials noted, include revitalizing the city’s street paving program, the Fir Street renovation, improving and beautifying city parks, hiring “the right people to take the Public Works Department mission to a new level” and working with city staff to rebuild the Pioneer Memorial Park fountain.

“I am very fortunate to close out my career with the most enjoyable job of my career,” Garlington said. “I love Sequim and the people who work and live here.”
