Deb Beckett, Sequim Middle School science teacher, reports that several Sequim Science Fair Club students have participated in competitions or other events since the Washington State Science Fair, including a trio of juniors from Sequim High School.

Sarah Henry was invited to present her project, ”The Effect of Hyperbolic Treatment on Post-Harvest Pear Production” at a banquet given by the Puget Sound Chapter of the Institute of Food Technologies. Besides attending the event, held at Starbucks headquarters in Seattle, Henry received a plaque honoring her exemplary project on the storage of food perishables.

Katherine Landoni presented her project, “Magnitude 9 Subduction Earthquakes as a Basis for Soil Liquefaction,” in an online conference call with the AWSG and other geologists in Washington. Landoni created a PowerPoint summarizing possible ways to measure liquefaction and projected the slides during her online call. After a question and answer session, one of the scientists offered to have her help conduct a soils boring test in Seattle at a later date.

Maeve Harris traveled to Houston, Texas, to compete in the International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering, and Environment Project. The I-SWEEP invites top-ranking science and math students from around the world to present their research projects and to participate in on-site team STEM challenges. Harris’ project, entitled “Generation of Power Using Piezo-Electric Leaves,” earned a Silver Award in the Energy category at this year’s event. She also earned $300 and enjoyed five days of tours and social events.
