The Sequim Sunrise Rotary Club had its most successful auction in its 20-plus years history, raising $32,757 for local and national charities March 13 at the Sequim Elks Lodge. The "Lucky Friday the 13th" auction had 160 patrons bid on airline tickets, housing services, vacations and more.

The club tried its first online auction a few weeks prior to the live event, bringing in $6,427.

Five local charitable organizations were invited to participate in the live and online auctions to assist Rotarians in raising funds. The club helped raise $1,423 for Sequim Education Foundation; $1,153, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula; $1,160, Dungeness Valley Health and Wellness Clinic; $1,045, Sequim Food Bank; and $1,646, Welfare for Animals Guild.

The club also chose the ShelterBox program, an emergency relief box containing a tent, cooking supplies, blankets and general survival supplies during disasters, as its "funded item" for the year. They raised $12,000 toward the program, which can buy 12 Shelter Boxes.

"It was a pleasant surprise in these times to raise so much money for ShelterBox through the auction," said Jim Pickett, ShelterBox representative and Rotarian.

The $14,000 remaining that the Rotary raised will be dispersed in 2009-2010 by the club’s board to fund community and international service projects. Incoming Rotary president Nell Clausen will be choosing the recipients of the remaining money.
