Sequim Sunrise Rotary celebrates 30 years

Sequim Sunrise Rotary celebrated 30 years of helping the community on Jan. 13, at Sunland Golf &Country Club, after its first ever meeting on Jan. 10, 1987.

The club, formerly known as the Dungeness Valley Rotary Club, was chartered on Dec. 24, 1986, with 35 members. Today, the group has 86 active members.

Four charter members were present for the 30th anniversary including Dave Salmon, Ron Bell, Dave Cummins and Russ Mellon. Fellow charter member Joe Corn remains active in the club too but was not at the meeting.

The Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors performed a ribbon cutting honoring the club and presented it with a membership plaque.

Since 1987, the club has supported Sequim’s youths with academic and vocational scholarships, helped improve various local parks including Carrie Blake, the Japanese Friendship Garden and Robin Hill, and it’s supported various charities and nonprofits including the Boys &Girls Club, Sequim Food Bank and Olympic Theatre Arts.

Internationally, club members have supported water projects in Haiti and Kenya and the club remains a recognized donor to Rotary International projects including Polio Plus and Shelter Box.

Sequim Sunrise Rotary funds it activities through member donations, the flag display program on patriotic holidays and its auction dinner.

The Sequim Sunrise Rotary Club meets at 7 a.m. Fridays in Sunland Golf &Country Club, 109 Hilltop Drive. For more information on the club, visit www.sequimsunriserotary.org/.
