The Beta Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International — a women educators’ professional and philanthropic organization — has made good on a new round of grants aimed at supporting educational projects by nonprofit agencies.
In September, Beta Nu members announced their Community Education Grant series, to be awarded to agencies serving people living in areas served by the Sequim and Port Angeles school districts. Though they are one-time grants, consideration would be given to continuing projects.
A total of $29,410 for eight grants was awarded in December, including:
• Greywolf Elementary School, an after-school math program, a drama club, an artist’s program and a supplemental reading program, for a total of $7,900;
• Dungeness River Audubon Center, a sixth-grade stewardship field trip program, for $8,000;
• Sequim Community Orchestra, a Strings for Kids program, for $4,000;
• Feiro Marine Life Center for an after-school underwater robotics program, for $4,940, and
• Clallam Mosaic, for literacy for non-readers with developmental disabilities, for $4,970.
For the past 20 years, Beta Nu has provided grants for university students seeking to obtain teacher certification and for school employees to extend their own education. Over those years, about $350,000 in the form of scholarships have been donated to Clallam County educators and future educators.
Beta Nu members said they are particularly grateful to teacher benefactors who donated funds to the chapter: Helen Gariepy, Helen Haller Heimbaugh and Isabelle Whitfield.
Community Education Grants will be available again in the spring. Read more about the organization at www.betanuchapter.com.
