Sequim’s first sizable snow of the season

Updated to include a more specific name for the precipitation on Feb. 10.

Sebastian Barragan, a maintenance worker for the City of Sequim, had a similar response to many Sequim residents last week in response to the snowfall.

“I’ve been expecting it awhile,” he said.

Sequim experienced its first traceable snow of 2025 on Feb. 4 and again on Feb. 6 with accumulation between two and eight inches depending on elevation. Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 9, saw sleet fall through the morning and early afternoon and graupel (a soft hail) on the morning of Feb. 10.

Sequim School District had two-hour delays on Feb. 4 and 6.

Crews with the City of Sequim, Clallam County and Department of Transportation worked to clear roads those days and crews placed de-icer to prevent slippery areas.

Sub-freezing temperatures are expected to continue through this week but no snow is anticipated in lower elevations.

Barragan said it was his first week working for the city as he cleared the sidewalks of snow on Feb. 6.

“Being able to help the community I live in has been great,” he said.

As for weather-related incidents, Trooper Katherine Weatherwax with the Washington State Patrol said the Sequim area had one reportable collision on the morning of Feb. 6 east of Sequim with one car in a ditch.

She said about a dozen vehicles needed assistance to get out of snow by the Clallam/Jefferson County line.

Sequim Police Chief Mike Hill said the city saw a few collisions where ice/snow were a contributing factor but less than other snow events due to fewer people driving.

Clallam County Fire District 3 reports they had a handful of weather-related calls between Feb. 4-6 but none that were life-threatening.
