The Shipley Center, formerly the Sequim Senior Activity Center, hosts its sixth Open House from 1-4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the facility, 921 E. Hammond St.
See activity demonstrations such as Wii Bowling, table games, computers, and exercise classes, and get questions answered from one of the many volunteer instructors.
Tours of the Center will be available along with free information about community resources for seniors.
The public is invited.
Door prizes donated by local merchants will be available in a free drawing. Each participant will get five free chances to win. There will be free entertainment and refreshments.
Doors open at 1 p.m. with a special program at 2 p.m. featuring the latest computer generated “fly through” of the proposed new center, created by local architect Roy Hellwig of Tormod Hellwig, LLC.
Community and business leaders and elected officials are invited to attend and show their support for the center and its nonprofit mission.
Margaret Cox, past president of the board of directors, and Rena Blank, board secretary, are the organizers of this year’s event.
About the center
Shipley Center is the new trade name of Sequim Senior Services, an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The center has more than 1,600 members and provides a place to meet new friends while participating in activities, classes, trips and volunteer opportunities designed for active older adults.
Membership is $40 per year per person or $70 per couple. Free memberships for low income seniors, funded by grants from the City of Sequim, the Haller Foundation, the Halloran Foundation and others, are available.
Shipley Center is named in recognition of the generosity of member R. Leo Shipley, who earlier this year donated his 51-space mobile home park — Baywood Village — to Sequim Senior Services to benefit its nonprofit operations and to help towards its goal of a new center.
The new Center is to be located near the Washington Street Exit off US Highway 101. Shipley purchased 4.5 acres of the site in 2010 for the organization with the remaining 1.3 acres purchased through the gifts of other generous donors in 2012.
A capital campaign is under way to raise funds for construction.
