State puts Miller Peninsula trail plan to public

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission is inviting the public to learn about the draft interim trail plan for the Miller Peninsula State Park property at an open house in Sequim.

State parks staff will present the plan from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at the Guy Cole Conference Center, 202 Blake Ave.

The Miller Peninsula State Park property includes more than 2,800 acres in Clallam County, north of U.S. Highway 101 and east of Sequim. The property is mostly upland forest, with more than three miles of shoreline on the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Discovery Bay.

In developing the interim plan, state park staffers worked with a trail advisory group, which included property neighbors and representatives from hiking, biking and equestrian use groups.

The interim trail plan establishes trail management objectives for existing and proposed park trails, identifies needed trail maintenance, signage and other related improvements, and sets forth recommendations for working with volunteer groups to assist in trail maintenance and improvement projects.

In 2005, state park staffers undertook an extensive public planning process to help develop a vision for future development of the Miller Peninsula State Park property, but the efforts were placed on hold because of an economic downturn two years later. State officials say they are now focused on an interim management plan of the property until funding becomes available for more improvements.

Following the open house, the Draft Interim Trail Plan goes to the state parks director for approval. Find more information about the interim trail plan at www.parks.wa.gov.
