Tacoma man arrested for excavator, mowers thefts

Three felony charges set for arraignment on March 25

A Tacoma man faces burglary and theft charges in Clallam County for allegedly stealing an excavator and lawnmowers from Sequim businesses in mid-February.

Calvin Leroy Larson, 33, of Tacoma, was arrested on March 16 after Sequim Police and partnering agencies allegedly linked him to the theft of four riding lawn mowers on Feb. 13 valued at $15,000 from Sequim Home Depot, 1145 W. Washington St., and an excavator valued at $29,000 from the Jamestown Healing Center (medication-assisted treatment clinic), 526 S. Ninth Ave.

A warrant for Larson’s arrest was signed on March 15, and he was arrested the following day. He remains in custody on March 22 and requested a court appointed defense attorney.

Larson appeared in Clallam County Superior Court via video on March 17, with his arraignment hearing set for 9 a.m. March 25 with a possible jury trial to be set.

Sequim Police look to formally charge him with two counts of theft in the first degree and one count of burglary in the second degree.

Larson could face up to 10 years in prison and/or a $20,000 fine for each felony charge. His bail was set at $50,000 by judge Brent Basden.

Sequim Police reported that when Larson was arrested, he was allegedly in possession of a firearm; he is prohibited from having one because of 11 previous felony convictions, including robbery, theft and trafficking in stolen property.

Any charge(s) regarding this are pending with the Clallam County Prosecutor’s Office, Sequim Police Department reported.

Sequim Police detective Rick Larsen worked with Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Enforcement Team detectives and Pierce County Department of Corrections Officers in apprehending and arresting Larson, court documents indicate.

Sequim Police initially responded to reported thefts and burglary of the mowers at Home Depot on Feb. 14 and later in the day at the tribe’s clinic about the theft of an excavator. Both sites had video surveillance of a white Ford F-150 with a flatbed trailer driving by the areas of the crimes the previous day, according to court documents.

Both the excavator and mowers were recovered on Feb. 14 by the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office after a tip led them to Diamond Point, Sequim Police report.

While investigating the case, Larsen connected with the Department of Corrections officers because Larson was under their supervision, and the detective learned the suspect was using the same white truck allegedly depicted in video surveillance and pinpointed by witnesses, according to court documents.
