Tall ships coming to Sequim

The brig Lady Washington, the official ship of the state of Washington, and her companion ship, the Hawaiian Chieftain, visit John Wayne Marina in Sequim from July 9-11.

The ships are scheduled to arrive late on Tuesday, July 9, after a transit from Aberdeen. During their stay in Sequim, the vessels will open for public tours and offer an “Evening Sail” and a “Battle Sail.”

Walk-on tours are a chance to visit the vessels at the dock and meet the crews, who will be wearing period costumes. Reservations are not required, and admission is by donation ($3 suggested).

“Evening Sails” (Lady Washington only) are family oriented experiences that offer guests a chance to help raise a sail, learn a sailor’s work song and take the helm of a real tall ship, conditions permitting. Cost is $29 per person.

“Battle Sails” feature both ships in a mock cannon battle with real cannon, real gunpowder and authentic 18th-century naval maneuvers. Tickets are $60 for adults, $50 for students/seniors/active military and $40 children 12 and younger.

Purchases of eight or more Battle Sail tickets in a single order qualify for a 15-percent per-ticket discount.

Tickets for all excursions are available online at or by calling 800-200-5239.

The public is invited to sail aboard the ships on an overnight, one-way cruise to Squalicum Harbor in Bellingham. The cruise takes guests through the Strait of Juan de Fuca through the San Juan Islands and into Bellingham Bay. Tickets are $125 each and must be purchased in advance. Call 800-200-5239.
