Two new COVID-19 cases were reported in Clallam County while Jefferson County remained without a new case reported in September.

Clallam County has had 235 positives since March, with eight currently active cases. The infection rate was 21 per 100,000 population during the past two weeks, in the state’s low-risk category.

Clallam County Health Officer Dr. Allison Unthank said the infection rate will be updated today. She also said the two cases reported Sunday were contracted from other local positives.

Clallam County’s infection rate has dropped considerably since a high point of 97 per 100,000 in August. If the county can maintain an infection rate below 75 per 100,000, officials hope schools can start some in-person instruction as early as Oct. 5.

Jefferson County has had 71 positives since March, with four active cases. The last positive test reported in the county was Aug. 31.

Jefferson County’s infection rate is 3 per 100,000 during the past weeks, and if the county continues to see the current trend, it will hit 0 per 100,000 some time this week, Health Officer Dr. Tom Locke said.

Locke will provide his weekly COVID-19 update to the Board of Jefferson County Commissioners today.

Locke expects Jefferson County school re-openings and vaccines will be major topics of discussion.
