United Way of Clallam County begins the 2008 fund drive with a "Day of Caring" on Sept. 12-13. Traditionally the Day of Caring is a volunteer opportunity to give back to the community. This year United Way partners with the North Olympic Library System to showcase the agencies and services that help support families and individuals in the county.
The event features a fair at the library branches in Sequim, Port Angeles, Clallam Bay and Forks where 27 United Way partner agencies will present information about available services.
Other presenters include fire districts, that will help with skateboard, bicycle and car seat safety. The county Department of Social and Health Services and First Step will help eligible families apply for health insurance for children. Senior Information and Assistance will provide information to help support the older adult population. The Health Department will share information on getting and staying healthy and the new Volunteer Center of Clallam County will help people find local volunteer opportunities.
As part of the Day of Caring, the library system is offering a fine amnesty program for September called "Overdue Support of the Community!" Overdue books can be returned with only a donated item to be given to one of United Way’s partner agencies. Acceptable donation items include nonperishable food, personal hygiene supplies such as shampoo, conditioner and soap, feminine hygiene products, deodorant, infant formula, diapers, school supplies or office supplies such as reams of paper.
The Day of Caring is scheduled for 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Sequim and Port Angeles library branches.
This year’s United Way’s fundraising campaign theme is "Live United." The goal is $1 million. The volunteer campaign co-chairs are Dr. Gary Cohn, Port Angeles School District superintendent, and Dr. Sue Cohn, chairwoman of the NOLS board. Other campaign division chairs include Sharon Delabarre and Bob Schilling, Sequim; Dan McKeen, Port Angeles; Diana Reaume and Bill Peach, Forks; Linda Dillard, Clallam Bay/Sekiu; Tom Anderson, Joyce; Karen Meyer, employee business campaigns; Brian Kuh, corporate giving; Christian Polyak, federal campaign; Tom Angier, Washington state employee combined fund drive; Judy Scott, Clallam County employees; and Eric Lewis, Olympic Medical Center.
