Chaplains commemorated

The Four Chaplains observance will be led by Chaplain Dale Butler of the Sequim VFW at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, at the VFW Post, 169 W. Washington St.

The four chaplains have been recognized by presidents for their selfless acts of courage, compassion and faith on Feb. 3, 1943, during the sinking of the USAT Dorchester by a German U-boat. Please come and hear their story and how they demonstrated interfaith compassion in their relationship with the men on the ship and with each other. Go online to www.army.mil/fourchaplains and learn more.

American Legion Veteran Service Officers are available to help any veteran with VA claims questions and forms on Wednesdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Veterans Center in Port Angeles or by appointment in Sequim at the American Legion Hall at 107 E. Prairie St.

A help up with Stand Downs

This year marks 12 years that Voices For Veterans has been supporting and assisting homeless and needy veterans on the Olympic Peninsula. The Stand Downs in 2016 will be May 5 at Forks, July 25 at Port Townsend and Oct. 6 in Port Angeles.

Last year 585 veterans were given assistance so there still is a large need. During the year if you can purchase an extra bottle of shampoo, tube of toothpaste, toothbrush, razors, deodorant or lotion, it would be greatly appreciated. Normal size is best. Monetary donations are used to buy new underwear and jeans. If you have questions or contributions, e-mail me or call 683-6419. More information at www.voicesforveterans.org.

Help fix the roof

Sarge’s Place in Forks has a leaky roof! The 1970s flat roof is leaking badly and is being replaced by a new trussed roof. Cost is $75,000 total. A loan has been taken out for materials, but costs not covered by the loan include demolition and debris removal and contractor costs.

They are fundraising $15,000 to offset these costs. Sarge’s Place is part of the North Olympic Veteran’s Housing Network, a 501(c)3 organization. You can go to the Sarge’s Place website and donate or mail a donation to Sarge’s Place, 250 Ash Ave., Forks, WA 98331.

Any eligible veteran on the peninsula can be housed here, not just those who live in Forks. Please donate so a leaky roof does not ruin a great facility for our veterans.
