The public is invited at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, to honor all area veterans at the newly enlarged monument in front of the Spath Flagpole at 544 N. Sequim Ave.

Local Navy veteran Dan Smith, with assistance from Louie Rychlik and Jerry Brownfield, built the addition to the monument. This will allow space for more tiles honoring those who have served their country. Smith was a member of VA-192 (known as the World Famous Golden Dragons) during Vietnam on aircraft carrier USS Bonhomme Richard. The men, who donated their time for construction of the new addition, are Sequim Pioneers and Sequim High School alumni.

Larry Klinefelter is a Marine veteran who sets all the tiles, cleans the area and handles the paperwork. The project began at the Carlsborg VFW with Ted Cordua and his wife, Pauline, leading the team to partner with the Museum & Arts Center in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley City of Sequim to share the right-of-way. After a handshake agreement to build this needed area, Navy veteran Myron Spath joined in with a new flagpole in memory of his parents, Laura and Louis, and son Wally. Caretaker veteran Bob Cooper continued Ted Cordua’s work, and now Klinefelter carries on the tradition.

Davis Sand & Gravel, Sequim Redi-Mix, Primo Construction, Dana Davis and John Duquette donated materials.
