The North Olympic Salmon Coalition hosts a planting session from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Meadowbrook Creek estuary just east of the Dungeness River by 3 Crabs Road and Sequim-Dungeness Way.
The Salmon Coalition acquired 4,250 American dune grass plugs (Leymus mollis) to be planted to minimize shoreline erosion and help protect many organisms, including salmon, which utilize the shoreline environment.
All ages of volunteers are welcome with tools and gloves provided in limited supply. Participants encouraged to bring their own trowels and shovels, water, warm beverages and lunch along with warm, waterproof layers. Light refreshments will be available.
Salmon Coalition staff will discuss the restoration project’s impacts, too.
“The improvements to estuary functions as a result of this project are profound,” said Kevin Long, Salmon Coalition project manager.
“While most of the restored areas are expected to revegetate by natural recruitment, it is a good idea to give this beach berm community a boost with these dune grass plugs.”
