Walkling Trust awards $21K in community grants

The Ben and Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust will award $21,234 in community grants between seven organizations/projects in 2020.

Myrtle Walkling, who died in 1992, created the trust in her will and funded it with more than $1 million. It was her intent that the income from the trust be used for charitable and civic projects in Clallam County that otherwise might not happen.

Since the trust was funded in 1994, it has given more than $690,000 in grants.

The 2020 grant awards, along with how the funds are to be used, include:

• Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, $4,734; to purchase a Canon multi-function digital copier system

• Sequim Food Bank, $4,000; for Family Holiday Meal Program

• Port Angeles Food Bank, $4,000; Friday Food Bags program to students through summer months (10 weeks)

• Olympic Peninsula Community Clinic (formerly VIMO), $3,500; to purchase two computers, clothing, bus passes, antibiotics

• Field Arts & Events Hall, $2,500; for capital campaign to build a new performing arts and events center

• Boys and Girls Club of the Olympic Peninsula, $2,000; for capital campaign project (“Building Great Futures for Port Angeles Youth”)

• Rainforest Council for the Arts $500; to purchase drop cloths and bring the New Old Time Chautauqua group to perform.
