WAmend kicks off I-1329 signature gathering to amend the Constitution

I-1329 asks the people of Washington to call for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to reduce the influence of money on elections and government policy.

The amendment would overturn the Supreme Court’s Citizens United v. FEC decision and other decisions that granted constitutional rights to corporations and other special interests and would provide for regulation and disclosure of political contributions and spending in order to ensure that no entity gains undue influence over government as a result of money.

A minimum of 250,000 valid signatures needs to be collected in the next five months to get this initiative on the November statewide ballot.

WAmend, a statewide coalition of more than 25 organizations, is spearheading the campaign that will mandate Washington congressional representatives propose a joint resolution for an amendment to the Constitution clarifying constitutional rights are the rights of natural persons only; federal, state and local governments are empowered to regulate political contributions and expenditures; all political contributions and expenditures shall be disclosed in a full and timely manner.
