HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

? Teacher Andrea Slack is looking for more volunteer reading tutors to read with students. If you enjoy working with elementary school students and are interested in becoming a reading tutor, contact her at 582-3200.

? Buy a beautiful holiday poinsettia and benefit local schoolchildren. The Helen Haller Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization is sponsoring a holiday poinsettia sale. PTO members are taking orders for red, white, pink or red-flecked poinsettias. The flowers are available for purchase for $10 per plant through Nov. 22. Poinsettias will be available for pick up at the school office on Friday, Dec. 3. Sale proceeds benefit Helen Haller Elementary School students. GREYWOLF

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

? As part of the focus on reading this month at Greywolf Elementary, some teachers have taken turns dressing up as storybook characters to greet the students as they arrive in the morning.

? On Thursday, Nov. 18, a free family spaghetti feed will take place from 5-5:45 p.m., followed by a family read-in from 6-7 p.m. Parents, please help us plan ahead for enough food. You can notify your child’s teacher or the office to let us know how many adults and children will attend.

? The fifth-graders in Sue Gellor’s class are collecting peanut butter for the Sequim Food Bank. Donations will be accepted through Nov. 19. Please bring your peanut butter jars to the wagon by the front doors of the school.

? After the Veterans Day school assembly on Nov. 10, assistant principal Scott Harker received the following communication:

Mr. Harker,

I just wanted to say thank you for allowing me to be part of your Veterans Day assembly. I was so incredibly amazed by the positive conduct of your middle school students. They behaved at the most mature level, they were supportive of speakers, they were supportive of guests and they displayed support of our country in a manner that almost brought tears to my eyes. With the many terrible things we see on the news daily, your school filled me with hope. With every sacrifice I have made in my 26 years of service in the U.S. Coast Guard and the many times we had an in-flight emergency in the aircraft and it seemed it was closely MY TIME, your school brought confirmation that it was all worth it. With children in this country like Sequim Middle School students, I have high hopes for the future! Thank you!

? Nov. 18 is Fine Arts Night from 6-8 p.m. Please join us in celebrating an evening spotlight on fine arts at SMS. Parents and students will start in the large gym for an introduction by Principal Brian Jones. The choir and band will perform, and then you will be dismissed to visit art, drama and digital arts presentations in various locations.

? Olympic Peninsula Academy news:

Kevin Burke’s seventh-grade Washington state history students are continuing their march through time and learning how our region evolved with each passing century. Now the students are investigating the nature of various infectious diseases and their impact on both native and settler populations.

Carrie Rodland’s art students, grades 5-12, have been studying the work of art masters M.C. Escher and Vincent Van Gogh. They also are learning how to draw in perspective.

SEQUIM HIGH SCHOOL

? Sequim High School presents M*A*S*H. Based on the longstanding television show by the same name, M*A*S*H (which stands for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) shows us the lighter side of war. All your favorite television cast is represented including Hawkeye Pierce (played by James Willis), Duke Forrest (played by Harrison Mitchell), Frank Burns (played by Alex Holloway), Radar O’Reilly (played by Patrick McCready), “Hot Lips” Houlihan (played by Emily Carel) and Lt. Col. Blake (played by Patrick Carpenter), as well as a bevy of nurses, doctors and enlisted men. It’s all here, including a little romance mixed in with dramatic moments and a genuine love of life. Don’t miss this zany madcap comedy.

Shows are at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 19, and Saturday, Nov. 20. There will be a matinee at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18. Tickets are available at the door one hour before each show. Tickets are $7 general admission and $5 for seniors, children and students with ASB cards.
