Women’s soccer: Pirates dominate Tritons on road, Dolphins at home to clinch North Division title

Peninsula gave up a rare goal but not much else in a dominating, 6-1 win against Shoreline on Oct. 17 that clinches yet another division championship for the Pirates and head coach Kanyon Anderson.

Peninsula gave up a rare goal but not much else in a dominating, 6-1 win against Shoreline on Oct. 17 that clinches yet another division championship for the Pirates and head coach Kanyon Anderson.

The Peninsula women have given up just five goals in 14 matches this season, fewest in the NWAC. It didn’t seem to matter Monday, with PC roaring out to a 3-0 lead in the first half.

Hoku Afong, who leads Peninsula with nine goals this year, scored twice in the first 29 minutes.

Defender Bailie Zuber also scored a pair of goals, the first of her collegiate career, while Sydney Warren and Emilee Greve rounded out the scoring.

Coby Yoshimura, who is among the NWAC leaders in assists with seven, picked up two on Monday, while other assists came from Maddy Parton, Greve and Audrey Barham.

It’s the Pirates’ sixth consecutive Northwest Athletic Conference division championship.

Topping the Tritons

No home cooking? No worries.

Peninsula got two goals in each half in a 4-0 shutout of host Edmonds on Oct. 12, PC’s conference-leading 11th shutout of the season and extending the top-ranked Pirates’ winning streak to 10 games.

The Pirates got on the scoreboard in the 10th minute when Yoshimura scored off an assist from Tatiana Hagen.

Marriah Perez made it 2-0 in the 25th minute, with Afong picking up the assist.

Perez got her second goal at 54 minutes and Warren capped the scoring at 88 minutes. Parton and Malia Brudvik had assists.

Natalie Carreon went the distance in goal for Peninsula, recording her first solo shutout with four saves.

Looking ahead

The Pirates have a three-game road swing — Oct. 19 at Everett, Oct. 22 at Skagit Valley and Oct. 26 at Whatcom — before finishing the regular season at home against Edmonds on Oct. 29.

The NWAC tournament opens Nov. 2 with pigtail playoff games.

With a North Division title in hand, Peninsula is guaranteed a home quarterfinal playoff match at noon on Nov. 5.

The Final Four is set for Nov.11-13 at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.

Honors for Jury-Hale

Kameryn Jury-Hale, a Waianae, Hawaii native, was named the Under Armour Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for Week 8.

Jury-Hale plays center back for a Peninsula defensive squad that has allowed five goals all season and has notched 11 shutouts in 14 matches.

“Kam has been at the heart of what we have done this season,” PC head coach Kanyon Anderson said. “She is intelligent and skilled, tough and fast. The defensive effort of the entire team has been the reason for our success so far but we wouldn’t be where we are without Kam’s skill and leadership.”
