John P. Larson

September 4, 1936 – December 10, 2020

John P. Larson passed away at his home in Sequim, on December 10, 2020. He was 84.

John was born September 4, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and raised in Wallingford, Pennsylvania.

He lived a full life, graduating from Penn Charter and Lafayette College and following service as an officer in the Navy, he settled in Brooklyn, New York.

Forever regaling his time chipping paint on the oil tankers in the middle east as a summer job working for Sun Co., he believed in hard work and discipline. His career focused on finance, first as an officer of Citibank and later as Treasurer of the Todd Shipyards and an officer of the American Bureau of Shipping.

Being on or near the water was always important to John and his “mighty tin” boat produced many a blue fish. His love of golf was a lifelong passion, and every grandchild learned the art of putting at an early age. Stories of his trips to play Augusta as part of the Treasurers’ Club of New York were told often, as repeating a good story was never looked down upon!

His love for his children was shown constantly, and the great memories of the weekly Chinese food dinners are remembered fondly. With the arrival of grandchildren came the great “Pop-Pop conversations” that could last over an hour and finally, the creation of the daily quiz which he had produced and emailed daily to his grandchildren for the last five years. His last quiz was sent December 9th: the Ute Indians lived in southwest US – what state is named after them.

John is survived by his wife Sally (Bates) of Brooklyn and Shoreham, New York; his children John (Stephanie) of Lake Bluff, Illinois; Elizabeth (John) of Setauket, New York; Lucy (Kevin) of Norwood, Massachusetts. Beloved grandfather of Jack, Harry, Kirsten, Anne, Matthew, Katie, and Allison; brother of Anne Marie Mutch and the late James Larson and Frederick Larson. He is also survived by his close friend Marianne Payer of Sequim.

In light of the COVID situation, there will be no public memorial service.
