Richard (Dick) Shaw

July 26, 1931 – November 25, 2017

Richard Dick Shaw was born on July 26, 1931 in Sequim and was the third son of Daisy Bell Clawson and Rollin Putnam Shaw. He died on November 25, 2017 in Port Angeles.

He met his sweetheart Evelyn Mildred Smelling the first day of school in the 6th grade and they married September 29, 1951. This marriage was solemnized in June of 1955 for Time and All Eternity in the Salt Lake Temple. After graduation from Sequim High School in 1949 and their subsequent marriage, they settled down to farm in Sequim. That lasted until Dick’s brothers returned from the Korean War and started college on the G. I. Bill. Seeing little future in the dairy business unless they got a lot bigger, they sold the cows, loaded up the family sedan, and moved to Utah to start school.

Dick graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.A. in Education and a minor in mathematics, and thus starting a 36 year career as a math teacher first in California and then as “the” math teacher at Sequim High School until his retirement in 1995.

Dick was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) in the Dungeness River on a cold November day. The night before his baptism his dad told the three boys “if we are doing this we have got to be all in.” Dick took this advice to heart and faithfully served in the lay of ministry of his church until his death. This service included time as Bishop of the Sequim area, as the first Stake President of Port Angeles Washington Stake and Ordinance Worker at the Seattle Washington Temple.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, and two grandchildren.

He is survived by his “princess” Evelyn, sons Tim (Betty), Mark (Cindy) and adopted son RT Ball (Sherrie), daughter Valerie and adopted daughter Amber (Dave) Golding, 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM on December 10 and 9:30 to 10:30 AM on December 2 followed by the funeral at 11 AM at the Sequim Chapel, 815 West Washington Street. There will be no viewing except for family members. Internment will be at Sequim View Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation to your favorite charity.
