Severin (Dick) Raaum

Severin (Dick) Raaum has passed away after a very full life of 98 years.

Dick was born in Brevik, Norway in 1924, the son of Sigurd and Ingeborg Raaum. Fortunately he and his younger brother Gustav were both too young to join the Norwegian armed forces when the German occupation began in 1940 but they were involved in some resistance activities. Dick and his first wife, Britta Edgren (now deceased) had two children, Fredrik and Mette.

After earning a degree in textile engineering in Sweden, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1952 and settled in Portland, Oregon. He became a U.S. citizen in 1957. Dick worked for Jantzen Knitting Mills for 34 years, working both in Portland and New York. Portland is where he met and married Lucy Trowbridge and together raised two sons, Bruce and Scott.

They retired to Sunland in Sequim in 1986 where they enjoyed many good years of golf and great friends. Dick was also a member of the Sons of Norway.

After Lucy’s passing in 1997, Dick married Shirley Griffiths and spent 5 wonderful years with her before she too passed away. For the past 18 years he has been blessed to have Connie Rene as an incredibly kind friend and caregiver. Dick is survived by an ever growing family of 4 children, 7 grandchildren and at latest count 11 great grandchildren.

There will be a celebration of Dick’s life at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Sequim on January 7th at 1:30. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation.
