Mary Eileen ‘Babe’ Whitney Ellis

October 13, 1931 – September 11, 2023

Mary Eileen “Babe” Whitney Ellis of Sequim, Washington, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2023, of natural causes. She was 91.

Babe was born October 13, 1931, in Sequim, Washington, to Darle Leroy and Mary Kathleen (Collins) Whitney. She grew up on the Olympic Peninsula graduating from Sequim High School in 1949. She married Albert Earl Ellis on July 25, 1952.

She spent most of her adult life living in Seattle, where she worked in nutrition services at Highline School District. After retiring, she drove a courtesy van for AVIS. In 2021, Babe came home to Sequim after 70 years.

Babe loved watching the Seattle Mariners and Seahawk games and followed her grandchildren’s college teams on television. She also liked to read the Seattle Times every day of her adult life. And, above all, she loved to laugh.

Babe is survived by her three children Kathleen Ellis Rice of Kingston, WA, Linda Lou Ellis (Rick Bamer) of Port Angeles, WA and Craig Alan (Catherine) Ellis of Bellevue, WA; four grandchildren Adrienne Noelle Rice, Emily Christine Rice (Pryce Tymrak), Holly Catherine Ellis (Fiancé Cody Peplinski) and Mark Craig Ellis. Other survivors include her cousin Don Wood, who was very near and dear to her heart and many nieces and nephews in both the US and Canada.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Albert Earl Ellis; sister Ruth Darleen Whitney Heaton and her brother Melvin Desmond Whitney.

David (Dave) Salmon

September 16, 1939 – October 1, 2023

David (Dave) Eugene Salmon, 84, of Sequim, WA, passed away on October 1, 2023. He was born on September 16, 1939. Dave was a compassionate and strong-willed man who loved to serve in the community. He will be deeply missed by his loved ones.

Dave is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ann Lea (Hudson) Salmon. He is also survived by his daughter Katie Salmon-Newton and son-in-law Rob Newton, his daughter Christie Middleton-Sharpe and son-in-law Scott Middleton-Sharpe. He also leaves behind a legacy that he was so proud of… his grandchildren Andrew, Kyle, Cooper, and Katelynn Middleton-Sharpe and Haylie (Newton) Bissonette.

Dave was preceded in death by his father Ralph Leon Salmon, his mother Ethel Lee (Watson) Salmon, and his brother Ralph (Sam) Edward Salmon.

Dave attended Ballard High School and later in life earned an AA in both Management and Small Engine Repair from Peninsula Community College. He proudly served in the United States Air Force for 24 years, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant E7. During his military career, he was stationed in various locations including Paris, France, where he met his wife. He also served in Thailand, Michigan, Missouri, Idaho, Washington, Alaska, and Virginia. He was also stationed at the Pentagon for a time.

He retired from military service in 1979. After retiring from the military and moving west, Dave owned Sequim Bicycle Shop and served as the Director of Clallam County Red Cross.

Dave was actively involved for many years at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, where he enjoyed acolyting and flipping pancakes for Sunday breakfasts. More recently, he and his wife attended the Anglican Heart of Jesus Church in Sequim.

In his free time, Dave was a 25-year volunteer for Clallam County Fire District 3, serving as both a firefighter and an EMT. He was also a long-time member of the Sequim Sunrise Rotary Club and a supporter of the Irrigation Festival. Dave loved the beautiful trees, mountains, and beaches of the area. He enjoyed working with his tractor on the farm, as well as fishing, boating, and spending time at Diamond Point. He had a big heart for the community, his family, his friends, and many beloved dogs and cats throughout the years.

A Celebration of Life Memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 14, at 3 p.m. at the Adventist church building located at 30 Sanford Lane in Sequim. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Free Medical Clinic of Sequim, Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, or the Anglican Heart of Jesus Church in Sequim. Please join us in remembering and honoring the life of Dave Salmon.

Gayla Jean Spratt-Nuffer

Gayla Jean Spratt-Nuffer of Sequim died of sepsis at her Sequim residence on Oct. 2, 2023.

She was 76.

Spratt-Nuffer was born April 22, 1947.

Mark D. Almaden, Jr.

Mark D. Almaden, Jr. of Port Angeles died in Tacoma on Oct. 2, 2023.

He was 35.

Almaden was born Nov. 3, 1987.
