Baseball: Wolves drop heartbreakers to NK, Aberdeen

A tough-luck loss and a sterling pitching effort from a league foe saw Sequim drop two games after winning their season-opener last week.

With Sequim pitchers shutting down the Spartans just before a heavy rain stopped proceedings, Sequim opened the 2019 season with a 3-0 win on March 11.

Three Wolves combined on the two-hit shutout to knock off the 1A Spartans.

Starter Caleb Pozernick went three innings, giving up one hit, two walks and five strikeouts. Silas Thomas went three innings, giving up a hit and a walk, while striking out two. Joey Oliver capped the game with a hitless seventh.

And while Forks’ pitchers nearly met Sequim pitch for pitch, Sequim had enough to scratch an earned run off starter Carter Windle and reliever Joseph Reaume.

Oliver had a double, an RBI, a run scored and one of Sequim’s seven steals. Johnnie Young had a walk and an RBI and Michael Young had two stolen bases and a run scored.

On March 14, Johnnie Young threw a solid five innings in his first start of 2019 for Sequim, but North Kitsap senior Isaac Richardson was even better.

Richardson tossed six shutout innings with seven strikeouts and giving up two hits and a walk as the host North Kitsap Vikings shut out Sequim 3-0.

Young gave up three runs on six hits over five innings, while Thomas tossed a perfect inning of relief for Sequim.

Young and Brandon Barnett had the only hits for Sequim — both singles — and Zach McCracken drew a walk.

Jared Resiter was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored to pace the Vikings. NK freshman Colton Bower struck out two in the seventh for the save.

A late rally by the home team spoiled a non-league decision for the Wolves on March 16, who saw a one-run slip away in the seventh inning of an 8-7 loss at Aberdeen.

Elijah Brown hit a two-run double with two outs off reliever Michael Young to lift Aberdeen to the win.

Pozernick, Sequim’s starter, and Young combined to give up just five hits and three walks but the Wolves committed a costly five errors, leading to three unearned runs.

Young led Sequim at the plate with two hits and three RBIs, while Thomas was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Connor Bear had a double in two at-bats and Kyler Rollness had two of Sequim’s five steals.

The Wolves earned an 8-6 win over Sammamish on March 18; details were not available at press time.
