What a way to rebound.

After losing a heartbreaker to rival Port Angeles on April 26, Sequim’s Wolves rallied for victories — albeit in significantly different fashions — to improve to 6-4 in the Olympic League (10-5 overall) and into third place heading into this week’s play.

Against the Roughriders, a two-run lead didn’t last long as Port Angeles broke open a tight Olympic League game with two, two-run innings late in a 4-2 victory.

Ethan Floodstrom went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs as the Roughriders notched two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings off Sequim starter Ian Miller.

Despite the loss, Miller was sharp, spreading six hits and two walks over five innings; just two of his runs were earned.

Dane Bradow, Miller’s counterpart, was even more sharp, however, striking out nine Wolves and surrendering just one of the three Sequim hits. The Wolves did work Bradow for four walks.

Gavin Velarde had a double, James Grubb stole three bases and Justin Porter had a pair of steals. Miller and James Thayer had the other hits for Sequim.

On April 27, the Wolves won a wild, 15-13 home matchup with Olympic that saw Sequim draw 16 of the game’s 24 walks.

After the Trojans knocked out Grubb in the first inning en route to a four-run inning, Sequim scored two runs in the first, six in the second and six in the third, then held on as the Trojans scored nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Porter and Austin Hilliard combined for five hits — two of them triples — and six runs scored while cleanup hitter Johnnie Young drew four walks and stole two bases. Hilliard had a team-high four RBIs.

Porter picked up the win in relief, giving up three earned runs over four-and-a-third innings. Velarde picked up the save.

Olympic starter Keaton Dean gave up 12 earned runs in two innings.

On April 28, pitching was the name of the game in a 3-1 Sequim win at Kingston. Hilliard came within one out of a complete game, giving up just one unearned run, three hits and four walks while striking out four Buccaneers.

The Wolves managed just six hits but it was enough, tallying runs in the first, second and third innings. Grubb and Ryan Clark had RBI hits for the Wolves. Grubb added a hit, RBI and run scored.

Looking ahead

Sequim was scheduled to play at Bremerton on May 1 and league-leading North Kitsap on May 2.

The Wolves finish the regular season with a non-league matchup at 3A Mount Tahoma (Tacoma) on May 3.

The West Central District playoffs are May 6-13. The double-elimination tourney sees games hosted at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds, Curtis High School and Franklin Pierce High School.
