What a mess.

With just one game remaining for most Olympic League teams heading into the week, six teams are in line for a playoff spot with only one team (North Kitsap) having clinched a postseason berth.

Thanks to two crucial wins last week, Sequim (9-6, 11-7) kept pace with four other league foes boasting six league losses, giving the Wolves a chance for a spot at districts.

Needing a strong start from a pitcher to end a four-game losing streak, that’s exactly what Sequim got from Tanner Rhodefer on April 30. The junior hurler gave up just three hits and two runs — one earned — over seven innings as Sequim knocked off Olympic 5-2 on April 30.

Down 2-0 heading into the sixth inning, Sequim got run-scoring hits from Nick Johnston and Dylan Lott to take a 3-2 lead and added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh thanks to wildness by Trojan pitchers.

Johnston, Lott and Ian Dennis each finished 1-for-3 and teammate Dusty Bates had a double.

Two days later, Sequim managed just four hits and one run but that was all starter Nigel Christian and reliever Johnston needed. The pair tossed seven shutout innings as the Wolves knocked off North Mason 1-0 on May 2.

Bates had two hits while Dennis and Evan Hurn each had hits, but it was Brett Wright’s hustle that made the difference in the score. In the first inning with one out, Wright was hit by a pitch, stole second, went to third on Hurn’s single and scored on an error.

Christian and Johnston made that lead stand, though North Mason threatened several times. The Bulldogs had runners in scoring position in five innings — including leadoff doubles in the fifth and sixth, but Sequim worked out of the jams. Johnston came in to get the last four outs, striking out all four North Mason batters. Christian gave up just four hits and two walks, striking out nine in his five-and-two-third innings of work.
