A persistent Sequim offense batted back from a 6-0 deficit to knock off Kingston 7-6 on April 7, earning the Wolves a key Olympic League win.

Nigel Christian and Dusty Bates drove in two runs each and Tanner Rhodefer had three of Sequim’s 10 hits to drop the visiting Buccaneers.

Kingston got to Rhodefer for six runs — four earned — in the first two innings, but Sequim got three runs back in the second and scored one run each in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Christian knotted the game with a home-run to left-center field in the fifth, and Gavin Velarde scored the game-winning run in the sixth on a passed ball.

Austin Hilliard picked up the win, tossing three shutout innings with three strikeouts and giving up just one hit and a pair of walks.

Evan Hurn was 2-for-4 with a triple while Grubb had a double, RBI and run scored.

Sequim (2-2 in Olympic League play, 5-3 overall) was slated to take on North Mason in Belfair on April 14 — results were not available at press time.

The wins puts Sequim in fourth place behind three other squads without a league loss: Olympic, Port Angeles and North Kitsap.

“The league is what I anticipated — a very competitive league,” Sequim coach Dave Ditlefsen said. “We’re trying to hang in there.”

Ditlefsen noted a number of Wolves are dealing with injuries, from Ian Dennis’ bruised thumb to Christian’s elbow tendonitis to James Thayer recovering from knee surgery.

The Sequim coach said Christian, one of Sequim’s top pitchers in 2014, is on the mend.

“He’s making strides (and) looking to throw again this season,” Ditlefsen said.

The Wolves host Port Townsend on April 16 before hitting the road for three consecutive road games: April 17 at Vashon, April 20 at North Kitsap and April 21 at Bremerton.

Riders edge Wolves

Port Angeles scored four runs late and held off a seventh inning rally to top Sequim 4-2 on April 6.

The Roughriders scored two runs with two outs in the fifth inning and Jac Bohman added a two-run single in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead.

Sequim mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh, getting a two-run triple from Christian to score Hurn and Grubb. But Port Angeles pitcher Travis Payner — who tossed a complete game — struck out pinch-hitter Brady Vig to end the threat.

Rhodefer took the loss for Sequim giving up four runs (two earned) over five-and-two thirds innings. He struck out six.

Hurn had two of Sequim’s five hits.

Payner was dominant until the last inning, striking out 11 Wolves and walking just one.
