Some graduated a few months ago, some decades back, and others have commencement in their future.
Sequim High’s hoops stars of the past and the future rekindled the school’s annual alumni-versus-varsity matchup — along with an alumni-versus-alumni precursor — at Rick Kaps Gymnasium on Nov. 24.
The event kicked off with a group of about 18 former prep hardcourt stars splitting up and battling each other, with lineups featuring former SHS standouts such as Alex Barry (class of 2015), Jayson Brocklesby (class of 2013), Ian Austin (class of 2007) and John Textor (class of 2010), along with younger grads, including 2023 alumni Isaiah Moore, Zack Thompson and Vince Carrizosa, who’s redshirting this season at Peninsula College.
Barry finished his pre career with the most rebounds, second-most blocks, steals and 3-pointers made, and the third-highest point total, behind Ryan Kaps and Brocklesby.
After a shortened game amongst themselves, alumni took on Sequim High’s 2023-24 varsity boys team. Despite a barrage of 3-pointers from Keenan Green, the alumni edged their younger counterparts by a point.
“I think they may have been taking it easy on us,” organizer Art Green said. “[But] we had a great team out here.”
This event was SHS’s 23rd alumni game, he noted.
A class of 1991 graduate, Green was the elder statesman on the court. He said this year’s Wolves look solid.
“They’re good; they’re scrappy,” Green said. “Their defense will help them.”
Under second year head coach Craig Brooks, the Wolves kick off the season Nov. 29 at Klahowya and are at Fife on Dec. 2. A Dec. 5 home game against Clover Park was nixed from the schedule, so — following a Dec. 8 game at Bainbridge — the Wolves celebrate their home opener on Dec. 9 against Vashon.
