After getting routed by their cross-peninsula rivals three days prior by more than 40 points, Sequim rebounded with a 40-point-plus win of their own to close the week.

Nate Despain had 19 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals to lead the Wolves to an 82-35 home win over the over-matched Kingston Buccaneers on Jan. 11.

Erik Christiansen had 16 points, six rebounds and five steals, Kyler Rollness had nine points, Dallin Despain added eight and reserve Rigo Langston had a solid all-around game with seven points, five rebounds and five steals in the victory.

Senior Mitch McDaniel led the Bucs with nine points, but Kingston — who trailed 29-9 after one quarter and 41-17 by halftime — conceded 23 steals to the host Wolves (4-3 in Olympic League play, 8-5 overall).

Sequim started the week with a 74-29 loss to Port Angeles, the Wolves’ largest defeat to their cross-peninsula rivals in Sequim coach Greg Glasser’s 12-season tenure.

“It was a physical game; we have to be ready to play a physical game,” Glasser said. “I don’t think anyone was ready.”

Anton Kathol led a balanced Roughrider attack with 12 points, Laim Clark had 11, Lucas Jarnagin scored 10 and Gary Johnson III added nine points in the rout.

Nate Despain, who led Sequim with six points, sank two free throws three minutes into the first quarter to close the early scoring to 3-2 Port Angeles. But the Roughriders went on a 19-0 run to take a 24-2 lead into the second quarter.

A 3-pointer by Michael Young and basket by Despain cut the lead midway through the second at 26-8 but the Wolves never threatened after that falling behind 40-10 by halftime and 53-18 after three quarters.

Kyler Rollness and Joey Oliver had five points apiece while Young, Riley Coan and Hayden Eaton added three each.

“Kids are pretty resilient,” Glasser said. “This will sting longer than a regular loss because it’s PA … and it was a butt-kicking.”

Glasser noted to his players following the loss, “That game is not going to define our season.”

Last year Port Angeles topped Sequim by 30 in PA (75-45) and by seven at Sequim (59-52).

Sequim and Port Angeles refresh their rivalry in Sequim in a varsity doubleheader on Jan. 31, the final game of the regular season.
