Boys basketball: Wolves take one of three at Seattle tourney

Sequim back in league play this week

Facing two bigger schools, Sequim’s boys basketball squad came away with 1-2 record at the Tournament of Champions Holiday Classic in Seattle on Dec. 26-28.

On Dec. 26, the host 3A Franklin Quakers raced to a 44-21 halftime lead and knocked off Sequim 88-53.

Keith Smith led Franklin with 31 points and Eugene Artison added 21.

Sequim junior Alex Barry led the team with 15 points and Anthony Pinza added 12 points and six assists.

On Dec. 27, Barry led the 2A Sequim squad with 16 points, but it wasn’t nearly enough in a 67-40 loss to 4A Union of Vancouver, Wash. Isaiah Robinson, a 6-foot 9-inch center, led the Titans with 14 points. Barry was 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Rory Kallappa added nine points.

The Wolves (6-3) rebounded with a come-from-behind, 75-53 victory against Australia Npire, an Australian traveling team.

Npire built a four-point lead (32-28) before the Wolves roared back with a 27-16 third quarter that included a 17-0 run.

Barry led the Wolves with 23 points and Kallappa added 21, both hitting five 3-pointers apiece.

Kallappa was five-for-five from deep as Sequim sank 11-of-21 (52 percent) from beyond the arc.

Anthony Pinza had a season-high 12 assists while Barry led the team with 11 rebounds and three steals.

Sequim was back in action tonight, Jan. 7, at home against North Kitsap. The Wolves are at Port Angeles on Jan. 10 and at Bremerton on Jan. 13.
