Expectations remain high after an early postseason exit last year.

In the one and done game in the 2013 West Central District playoffs, Sequim lost 1-0 to the Franklin-Pierce Cardinals but much of that team is ready to go back to the postseason and even further, said head coach Dave Brasher.

“The core from last year is back,” he said. “The chemistry seems better this year, too.”

Leading the team are Nic Baird, Elijah Sanford, who received second team all-league as a defender, and Eli Berg.

The team as a whole worked on their game too in the offseason either with an indoor soccer league or a local travel team.

Brasher said a core of sophomores like Thomas Winfield and Cameron Chase must pick up much of the scoring to replace Mason Barrett, Sequim’s top scorer with nine goals.

Also back are seniors Hector Baylon, defender and Nic Baird, midfielder, who received honorable all-league mentions last year.

“It’s going to be pretty darn good,” Brasher said of his players.

Making the playoffs seems likely this year with a new Olympic League tournament in place. Teams in fourth and fifth play for a chance into the tournament and the top four teams compete for district seeding.

“We’re going to be solid,” Brasher said.

“Whether we can take the next step and challenge North Kitsap and Kingston near the top is what we’re hoping for. I think we’re going to make the playoffs it just depends on if we can score some goals with the new guys.”
