Boys soccer: Wolves blank Olympic, edge Vikings in PKs

Senior goalkeeper Jack Van de Wege helped keep his Sequim squad unbeaten in league play with a pair of key shootout saves, preserving a 1-0 win over North Kitsap’s Vikings on March 24.

“North Kitsap is a very good team so the kids were focused on putting our defensive mindset first and then focus on the attack and they did a really good job of that,” Sequim coach Ken Garling said.

In the fifth minute Brandon Charters, he said, made a nice weighted pass in between two defenders and Kristian Mingoy had a breakaway but it was ruled offside. After that, it was a back-and-forth scoreless battle.

Garling said Sequim did well to hold on to the ball and play up on the Vikings side of the field all game long.

“We just couldn’t put any in the net,” Garling said.

Van de Wege made back-to-back saves after the Wolves went up 3-2 in the shootout.

“Two penalty-kick saves is pretty tremendous,” Garling said.

SHS shuts out Trojans

Sequim remained unbeaten and unscored-upon in Olympic 2A League play with a 4-0 shutout over Olympic on March 22.

The Wolves got a shutout performance from keeper Van de Wege.

Sequim scored right away in the third minute on a corner kick from Charters that Rafael Flores headed in.

“That was a real nice goal,” Garling said.

The Wolves scored their second goal off a corner, as well. Flores took the corner and Aiden Henninger headed the ball off an Olympic defender and into the goal.

Ethan Knight scored in the 52nd minute on a solo effort. “It was a big shot off his left foot,” Garling said.

Ethan Anderson hit a cross in the 75th minute that Kristian Mingoy got a foot on for a goal.

“I’m happy with where we’re at, but we have a long way to go. We’re going to be tested in the next couple of games,” Garling said.

Sequim was scheduled to host Bainbridge on March 29; results were not available at press time.
