Boys soccer: Wolves run away with win in districts tune-up

Sequim poured in four goals in a 4-0 Senior Night win over Kingston on May 4, the Wolves’ final postseason tune-up.

“The biggest emphasis for us recently is finishing and scoring and we have been able to do that in the last couple of games,” coach Ken Garling said.

Garling said the Wolves dominated possession for much of the game, breaking through just before halftime.

“Rafa Flores got things rolling in the 33rd minute,” Garling said. “He followed up his shot that bounced off the goalkeeper and a defender, stayed with it and put it in net.”

Ethan Knight added the second score just after halftime.

“A tremendous solo goal, an overhead kick with his left foot that beat the keeper,” Garling said.

Brandon Wagner added a third score in the 60th minute.

“[It was] a nice, left-footed shot inside the box from about 15 yards low and hard to the corner,” Garling said.

Cristian Gonzalez finished it up with a penalty kick in the final minutes.

Coming up

Sequim (10-5) has the seventh seed to the West Central District 2/3 tournament and was scheduled to play at Franklin Pierce on May 10. Results were not available at press time; see sequimgazette.com for updates.

The winner of that game advances to the district semifinal and locks up a state berth, while the loser on May 12 takes on the winner of a May 10 Foster-Kingston game, needing to win the May 12 and a May 14 game to advance to state.

Six of the 16 entries advance to the state 2A tournament.
