Boys Swim: Another relay, swimmer qualify for districts

As the season progresses so does Sequim’s resilient boys swim team.

In Port Angeles, another relay team qualified for districts on Jan. 12, and so did backstroke swimmer Jax Thaxton at Olympic High School’s invite meet on Jan. 14.

Sequim Coach Linda Moats said the 200 free relay of Thaxton, Liam Payne, Christian Goodrich and Alex Berikoff put in an excellent effort with a time of 1:51.34 with each swimmer combining for faster swims last Thursday in the William Shore Memorial Pool.

The 200 medley relay of the same swimmers already qualified for districts earlier in the season, but they took Sequim’s only first-place finish on the day and knocked one second of their personal best too (2:06.46).

Overall, Sequim (0-4) lost 126-47 to Port Angeles (4-1) but several swimmers continued to best their times in multiple events.

Goodrich swam a 28.01 in the 50 free besting his time by nearly a second and Ian Miller knocked 10 seconds off his best (40.42) and Steve Nguyen dropped 3 seconds (33.71). Goodrich also swam 3 seconds faster in the 100 fly (1:16.35) and Berikoff dropped 4 seconds (1:17.13).

Sam Frymer set personal records in the 100 free (1:20.96) and 100 back (1:39.20), and Thayer dropped six seconds in the 100 free (1:25.57) and 11 seconds in the 200 free (3:20.47).

Mike Larsen also dropped 3 seconds in the 100 breaststroke (1:28.65), and the 400 free relay of Frymer, Miller, Nguyen and Thayer swam 24 seconds faster (6:04.85).

Swim-vatational

At the Swim-vatational at Olympic High School on Jan. 14, Moats said 10 of Sequim’s 12 races resulted in personal bests for individuals and relays.

Thaxton dropped 3.6 seconds in the 100 back (1:10.53) to qualify for districts and Goodrich dropped 8 seconds to 1:13.71, which afterward he told Moats he can get a district time, too.

The 200 free relay dropped 2 seconds to 1:48.61 from the meet against Port Angeles and the 200 medley scraped 0.2 seconds from their time.

Payne took 2 seconds off his 100 breaststroke (1:18.24), which Moats said he is less than 2 seconds from a district’s time. Larsen (1:21.47) and Berikoff (1:23.87) also set P.R.’s taking 7.2 and 6 seconds off their times.

Berikoff also dropped 6 seconds (2:43.80) in the 200 IM, while Goodrich (27.99) and Larsen (32.22) set personal bests in the 50 free.

“I have to say that the training we’ve been doing is paying off,” Moats said. “I attribute the achievement to self-motivation and openness to constructive coaching.”

Sequim next hosts Kingston (4-0) on Thursday, Jan. 19, in the Sequim YMCA.
