Boys swim/dive: Craig splashes to fourth place at state meet

He’s making this look all too easy.

Sequim High junior Mathew Craig earned his best finish at the class 2A state diving championships last week in Federal Way, setting a personal best with 293.55 points.

Craig solidly hit seven of his first eight dives to rank fifth in the preliminaries, then improved to fourth place in the finals with a forward double somersault in tuck position to edge past Orlando Stumvoll of Foss.

Craig placed 15th as a freshman and eighth last year.

Four of the state’s top five divers, including repeat champ Derek Anderson from Lindberg, came from Craig’s district.

Sequim’s other state meet entry, the Wolves’ 400 free relay, was disqualified for an inadequate turn.

The penalty ended their season but not before three of the four swimmers set personal best split times in the event.

“The news was very disappointing, but the boys took it in good stride,” Sequim coach Linda Moats said.

“Those that will return to Sequim High School swim team next year vowed to work hard so they could qualify again,” she said. “Those that aren’t returning were just happy to have been able to attend the state meet.”
