Several Sequim High swimmers and divers extended their season with district- and state-meet qualifying performances at a divisional meet in Port Angeles on Jan. 29.

Leading the way were divers Austin Clement and Cameron Harrison, who earned their third consecutive berths to the state tourney. Clement edged Harrison for first place (306.45-298.05) at the meet; both will take on the top state divers in Federal Way on Feb. 16-18.

Three Sequim individuals and two relay teams earned berths to the West Central District meet set for Feb. 8-9 at Hazen High School in Renton, including Doug Dunbar, who posted a 25.44-second finish in the 50 free sprint.

"He has been trying to make this qualification all season," Sequim coach Linda Moats said. "We are all so happy for him and proud."

Steve Dewey qualified in the 500 free after swimming to a first-place finish (6:23.76) at the divisional meet.

"This race has been a real challenge for him this year," Moats said. 

"(Steve) has a friendly competition with Markus Petersen. It’s comical if you have seen these two boys as Steve is about 6-2 and Markus is about 5-4."

Both Dewey and Petersen are slated to compete in this event at districts.

Eric Prosser also qualified for districts in diving, but Moats said the sophomore won’t compete in that event in order to focus on his swimming events.

"Eric was nervous … and really dove well," Moats said. "He is still relatively new to diving and we are very happy that he qualified."

Sequim’s A team in the 400 free relay (Dewey, Dunbar, Prosser and Jon Donahue) qualified for districts for the first time, led by speedy 100-yard splits by Dunbar (57.26) and Prosser (55.56).

Sequim’s 200 free relay squad of Dunbar, Donahue, Prosser and Kiano Stoppani also qualified for district. 

"(This was) fortuitous as two of the boys who previously swam on the relay that qualified earlier this season won’t be able to attend districts," Moats said.

Setting personal bests at the divisional meet last week were: Stoppani in the 200 free; Brandon Grow, Logan Hankinson, Wendell Lorenzen and David Vollenweider in the 50 free; Grow, Petersen and Stoppani in the 100 free; Hankinson and Yago DePazos in the 100 backstroke; and Petersen in the 100 breaststroke.

"I was very pleased with everyone’s performance today and we all look forward to the district meet," Moats said.
