After three years playing together, Sequim’s Justin Porter and Stephen Prorok qualified for the 2A state tourney after growing in confidence and experience.
The doubles team, both seniors, made the 2A state competition after taking the fourth seed at the West Central Districts III tournament on Oct. 28-29 at the Kitsap Athletic and Tennis Center in Bremerton. They’ll play May 27-28 at the Nordstrom Center in Seattle for a state title.
This was Porter and Prorok’s first time at districts after falling one match short at last year’s Olympic League Tournament. This season, they won the doubles league tournament to earn the No. 3 seed at districts.
Head coach Mark Textor said Prorok is a good shot maker and Porter remained consistent and motivated through the season.
“They both have big serves,” Textor said. “When they’re serving well, we’re hard to beat.”
Porter and Prorok opened with a bye before winning their first match-up from Highline 6-3. 6-4. Sequim’s doubles team faced No. 2 seed Donovan Dang and Patrick Tiamzon from Lindbergh and lost 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.
In the third/fourth place match-up, they played Mitchell Kunold and Tyler Meek from North Kitsap and lost 6-4, 6-3 to take the fourth seed to state in the spring.
Assistant coach Justine Wagner said the boys’ confidence has gone up a lot over the season, which helped them in close matches.
“Because of that experience (together),” they were able to execute,” she said.
“Both put in a lot of work in the offseason and playing singles helped with their groundplay, too.”
