Boys tennis: Sequim nets key win against Port Angeles

The season is early, but Sequim’s boys tennis team already has a signature win.

Opening against their rivals from across the peninsula, Sequim swept all three singles matches and got a clutch, come-from-behind win in No. 1 doubles play to edge the Port Angeles Roughriders 4-3 at home on Sept. 6.

“We put our strength in singles today,” Sequim coach Mark Textor said.

It showed, against a traditionally strong Roughrider team. In No. 1 singles action, Sequim senior Blake Wiker topped PA’s Hayden Woods, a district tourney qualifier in 2017, in straight sets (6-2,6-2)

“I though Blake played really well; he put pressure on (Woods) very well,” Textor said.

Thomas Hughes added a straight-set win in No. 2 singles play against Rider Jadon Seibel, and Raymond Lam added a 6-1, 6-0 win over Henry Shaw at No. 3 singles.

Port Angeles emerged with wins in three doubles matches and had a lead in a fourth and decisive match in No. 1 doubles action, but Sequim’s Damon Little and Liam Payne outlasted PA’s Brady Nickerson and Kyler Tourbin in three sets.

“We were more consistent (as the match went on),” Little said. “We got a couple of more returns in play. We had some nerves on our serves, to we had to work extra hard (to win).”

Textor added, “That’s a good win against a good team. I’m super proud how scrappy (they were).”

Little, who usually teamed with now-graduated Tim Porter last season, said this was his first match playing alongside Payne

“He’s very easy to work that; that helps,” Little said.

In their first-ever tennis match, Sequim’s Nate Despain and Ryan Tolberd dropped a close, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 match in No. 4 doubles play to Wyatt Hall and Kam Noard.

Wolves win at Klahowya

Sequim added a 6-1 win over 1A Klahowya at home on Sept. 7, with all three singles and three doubles teams winning.

Wiker topped Klahowya’s Jacob Kraft 6-1, 6-0, while Hughes beat Drew Kraft 6-0, 6-1 and Lam swept Tyler Godsey, 6-3, 6-0.

In doubles’ play, Sequim’s Liam Braaten and Sam Frymyer topped Eric Lochrs and Grant Palmer 6-0, 6-2 on No. 2 doubles play while SHS’s Henry Hughes and Dustin Koch beat Dylan Jackson and Jackson Palmer, 6-1 and 6-2. Depain and Tolberd picked up their first win on the season, sweeping Evan Cole and Oliver Larson 6-0, 6-0.
